This past year I got into all law schools of my choice. But I couldn't afford to go.
I couldn't take out student loans since my house is going through foreclosure and our credit is bad.
I couldn't get any federal or state financial aid since I am undocumented.
I decided to delay law school for another year, to delay our dreams. This dream has been delayed since I was 16 and decided to be a public interest attorney.
Now, as I find myself suddenly fatherless, this dream seems more elusive than ever.
This August, along with fellow undocumented students, I am doing a 511 mile bike ride from UCLA to UC Berkeley in order to raise funds for students like me who have a lot of talent and potential, but are denied access to education due to the financial constraints that come with being undocumented.
What do I want to do with a law degree? Serve the community. Those aren't just empty words--I have spent most of my teenage life and early 20s in public service.
In high school, I used to coach and judge policy debate for the urban debate leagues.
I continued this in college, and
served as Legislative Director and Student Body President at one time, arranging rallies, marches onto Sacramento to fight budget cuts, and so much more.
Since graduation from college, I have been involved at the leadership ranks of the immigrant youth movement which can be seen in the following articles.
